Former district governor’s office · now a culture house

Pertev Naili Boratav Culture House

In the arasta, a building whose ground floor was once the women’s prison and upper floor the district governor’s office; today a small culture house keeping alive the memory of the folklorist Pertev Naili Boratav and his father, District Governor Abdurrahman Nail Bey.

Location plan: Pertev Naili Boratav Culture House, the route line and nearby stops. The 7 marks 7 Kapı.

One building, two memories

The ground floor of this building in the arasta served as the women’s prison until the early years of the Republic, and the upper floor as the district governor’s office. Today there is a culture house upstairs and shops below.

A note on a common mix-up: this is not the madrasa of the Yıldırım Bayezid Complex. The madrasa was a separate building and was completely removed in 1953.

Pertev Naili Boratav

Pertev Naili Boratav (1907–1998), one of the founding figures of Turkish folklore studies, was tied to the town through his father, Abdurrahman Nail Bey, who served as Mudurnu’s district governor. The culture house displays photographs, handmade tools and garments of Mudurnu silk. Ask locally for opening hours.
