Mudurnu Clock Tower

On the slope east of the bazaar: a 12-metre tower first built of wood in 1890–91 and rebuilt in stone after a fire in 1900. A short climb rewarded with a view over the town.

Location plan: Mudurnu Clock Tower, the route line and nearby stops. The 7 marks 7 Kapı.

The tower

The first tower was built of wood in 1890–91 and burned in 1900. Today’s stone tower was rebuilt in 1904–05 by the labour of prisoners from Mudurnu prison. Sources differ on where the stone came from: some say it was gathered locally, others that it was taken from Mudurnu Castle.

  • Thirty wooden steps climb to the clock storey with its three faces.
  • The iron clockwork was made by a local blacksmith; the bell weighs about 185 kilograms.
  • The tower was damaged by fire in 1964 and repaired; in the 1990s it was clad in wood.

The view, and back to the table

The tower stands on the hillside, so it takes a short climb — rewarded with a view over the roofs of the bazaar. From here 7 Kapı is just a few minutes’ walk downhill: the route ends at the table.
